When our daughter was pregnant and I was feeling rusty in handling crying babies, my daughter invited me to a class on newborn baby care with her. It was good to hear the medical techniques that are now known and shared with these new moms, rather than trial and error as in another time and place. I was entranced by a video on swaddling a baby by
"The Happiest Baby on the Block" people. They took a crying, fussing baby ( I mean really fussing!) and calmed it like magic. Maybe this is just what
Grandma's have always known about the power of swaddling a baby!
"The Happiest Baby of the Block" folks have videos and diagrams, but until you try it, you won't truly understand the power and beauty and simplicity of it all. So, go visit your neighbors newborn baby, or your grandson or granddaughter and give it a whirl! Learn the calm and sweetness of being able to calm an unhappy baby and it will do your heart and soul good.
You can turn any
baby blanket into a
swaddling blanket. Just lay it square and then proceed with the specific instructions. If the baby fusses when you start out, just realize it is only fleeting and that baby will love you for it, in a minute!
There are all kinds of swaddling blankets in stores and I had started to give them as gifts just to remind tired parents of this almost foolproof method of baby relaxation. But then I found some fun new designer swaddling blankets and have made that my new favorite
newborn gift. Who doesn't love a
ladybug or a
baby calf. Warm and soft and cut for the perfect swaddling job everytime (OK, after you have practiced a bit).
Grandma's know the power of swaddling a baby, but you can too! A baby will love you for it!
