Are you called “Grandmother” or “Nana” or “Granny”? I know a grandma that goes by each one of those names. And the number of names that stand for that special someone in a child’s life is growing. Many of us grandparents today are choosing the name we hope to be called by our little “grand” someone. Some we can indeed choose, but some our little ones will choose for us – and those can become some of our favorite names.
My husband and I did not want to just go by grandma and grandpa – that’s what our grandparents are called! So we thought and tried out new names: Gramps, Grandfather, Granny, Mema, and on and on. We finally settled on two names that we thought sounded so much more youthful – Nana and Granddad. Youthful sounding or not, those are the names we introduced the new grand-babies to and so far they seem to be holding – at least for our 18 month old grandson. The first time Seth said “Nana” and every time since, it seems, has been a special blessing in my heart. And the smile on Granddad’s face says he feels just the same.
The joys of grand-parenting only begins with a name. Because from there the joys blossom into all kinds of special moments, precious memories and wonderful family times!
As you and your family step into the new world of grand-parenting, cherish those “grand” moments with a gift that recognizes the special role grandparents play in the life of their grand-babies and grandchildren. Here are 3 great gift ideas:
